The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new set of rules in EU law on personal data protection and privacy of businesses in an increasingly data-driven world for EU citizens for transactions that occur within EU member states. It majorly addresses the export of personal data outside the EU. GDPR was adopted on 27 April 2016, becomes enforceable from 25 May 2018, after a two-year transition period. It replaces the Data Protection Directive 1995.
GDPR is a regulation designed to give EU citizens more control over their data. It aims primarily to simplify the regulatory environment for international business so both residents and businesses can fully benefit from the digital economy. Almost every aspect of our lives revolves around data, from social media companies to banks, retailers, and governments, every service we use involves the collection, analysis, and storage of our personal data including our name, address, credit card number by the organizations. Data breaches unavoidably happen. Information gets lost, stolen or otherwise released into the hands of people who were never intended to see it -- and those people often have malicious intent.
The digital future of Europe can only be fabricated on trust. GDPR is the most important change in data privacy regulation in 20 years, organizations will have to ensure that personal data is gathered legally and under strict conditions, those who collect and manage it will be obliged to protect it from misuse and exploitation, as well as to respect the rights of data owners - or face penalties for not doing so. GDPR protects Basic identity information such as name, address, and ID numbers, Web data such as location, IP address, cookie data and RFID tags, Health and genetic data, Biometric data, Racial or ethnic data, Political opinions, Sexual orientation.
